Brand vs Branding – And Why Most Businesses Mix Them Up

Brand vs Branding – And Why Most Businesses…

I recently came across something written by a brand specialist, and it really resonated with me.

Why?
Because I see this a lot with the businesses I work with – saying they need to “fix their branding,” when the real issue often sits much deeper.

“Paul, we really need to work on our BRANDING.”
But here’s the thing…
It’s usually NOT the logo.
It’s NOT the colours.
It’s NOT the typography.

It’s the BRAND itself.
The team isn’t aligned.
The vision feels fuzzy.
Everyone describes the business differently.
No one is completely sure what the brand actually STANDS FOR.

And that’s when it clicks…
Most people mix up two completely different things:
→ Brand
→ Branding

And when you confuse the terms, you don’t know what you actually need — or where to start.
So I thought it would be useful to break it down simply, because understanding the difference can save a lot of time, money and frustration.

Here’s the clearer way to think about it:
Brand is who you are.
Branding is how you show it.

Brand is the perception people have of you.
Branding is the visual and verbal identity that shapes that perception.

Brand lives in the audience’s mind.
Branding lives in your marketing materials.

Brand is emotional.
Branding is intentional.

Your brand is the foundation.
Your branding is the expression.

And here’s the risk:
If you rush into tweaking your logo, colours or website without knowing what your brand really is…
you’re decorating a house that hasn’t been built properly.

At Yellow Jersey, this is exactly where I help.
If your brand is solid – great. I’ll create the branding that brings it to life and makes it unmistakably yours.

If your brand needs clarifying — I’ll help you define it so your design, marketing and messaging all pull in the same direction.

Because when you know who you are, your branding finally works the way it should.

If you're unsure whether it's your brand or your branding that needs attention, I can help.

I offer a free overview consultation where I’ll look at your current branding — and even your brand itself if needed — and give you clear, honest guidance on what will actually move your business forward.

No pressure. No jargon. Just a chance to get clarity.
